Consumer unit upgrades
Your consumer unit, often called the fuse box, controls and protects every circuit in your property. Replacing an old unit adds RCD protection against electric shock and helps reduce the risk of fire.
Signs it may be time to upgrade
- You still have old rewireable fuses (fuse wire) rather than switches
- There's no RCD protection, or only some circuits are protected
- An EICR has recommended replacing the unit
- You're adding new circuits, such as an EV charger, extension or garden room
- The unit is damaged, or switches trip repeatedly without an obvious cause (this needs investigating first)
What's included
- Testing the existing circuits before the change, because some faults must be put right before a new unit can be switched on
- A new consumer unit in a non-combustible enclosure, as the wiring regulations require for homes
- RCBO or RCD protection, with surge protection where it's needed
- Clear labelling of every circuit
- Testing and an Electrical Installation Certificate
Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable building work in England under Part P of the Building Regulations. We'll explain how it will be notified for your job.

Tell us what you have now. A photo of the existing unit helps.
Check and quote
We look at the existing installation and earthing, then give you a clear price.
Installation
The power will be off while the unit is changed. We'll agree timings with you beforehand.
Testing and paperwork
Every circuit is tested and you receive your certificate.
Common questions
Do I need a new consumer unit?
Not always. If your current unit has RCD protection and is in good condition, it may be fine. We'll tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worth doing.
How long will the power be off?
For most of the time we're working on the unit. We'll agree timings with you before we start so you can plan around it.
What if faults are found on my existing circuits?
Modern RCDs are sensitive, so faults that went unnoticed before can cause tripping. We'll explain what we've found and quote to put it right before the new unit goes in.
Can you upgrade my consumer unit for an EV charger?
Yes. If your current unit can't take the extra circuit, we can upgrade it as part of the charger installation.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes. You'll receive an Electrical Installation Certificate once the work has been tested.
